Border officers may ask for proof of sufficient funds, a return or onward ticket, and accommodation details. Two EU border systems affect Americans: the Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational since 10 April 2026 and records entry/exit data plus biometrics at the border with no advance application or fee; ETIAS, a pre-travel online authorization costing EUR 20 for most adult applicants, is scheduled to start operations in the last quarter of 2026 and is NOT required as of 2026-06-21. Until ETIAS becomes mandatory after its transition and grace periods, a valid passport and normal border-entry documents are sufficient.
