Russia (RU) ordinary passport holders do not need a visa to visit Kazakhstan for tourism or short stays. Under the long-standing CIS visa-free arrangement and Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) membership, Russian citizens may enter visa-free and stay up to 90 calendar days within any rolling 180-day period. Uniquely, Russians may cross the border using either an international (foreign-travel) passport or an internal Russian ID, as the two countries maintain ID-based travel. No advance application, fee, or eVisa is required for the visa-free channel. The main compliance obligation is migration registration: the host or receiving party (hotel, employer, inviting individual) must notify the migration service of the foreigner's arrival, generally within 3 working days. Stays beyond 90 days in 180 require a temporary residence permit or visa. While Russian citizens enjoy visa-free entry, note that Kazakhstan has been tightening enforcement of the 90/180 limit since 2023-2024 (closing the prior re-entry "visa run" loophole), and broader migration reforms (including the Altyn Visa program) were announced in 2026, though none remove the visa-free regime for Russians. Kazakhstan is not in the Schengen area, so Schengen 90/180 and ETIAS rules do not apply.
