Russian ordinary passport holders need a Schengen Type C short-stay visa to visit Italy for tourism. There is no visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or ETIAS option. As of 30 May 2026 the visa must be obtained in advance through the Italian consulate / visa centre in Russia (an online e-visa portal for the same Type C visa launches 1 June 2026). Italy is a Schengen Area member, and Russian Federation citizens are a visa-required nationality for the Schengen zone. A short tourist trip requires a uniform Schengen Type C (short-stay) visa applied for in advance — there is no visa-free entry, no visa-on-arrival, and ETIAS does not apply to Russians (ETIAS only covers visa-exempt nationalities). The Schengen short-stay rule allows a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period across all Schengen countries combined. Applications are lodged through the Italian Visa Management Service (VMS) / authorised visa centres in Russia, with mandatory biometrics and travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000. Two recent developments matter: (1) since 7 November 2025 the European Commission has tightened multiple-entry visa rules for Russian nationals, so applicants now typically receive single-entry visas and must re-apply for each trip, with only narrow exceptions; and (2) Italy launches an online e-visa portal for Russian tourists on 1 June 2026, intended to cut processing from 40-60 days to as little as five days — but this is still the same Schengen Type C visa applied for online, with an in-person biometric appointment still required. As of the verification date (30 May 2026) the conventional consular/VFS process applies; from 1 June 2026 the same visa can be initiated online. Default verdict: visa-required.
