Key practical points: your passport should be valid for at least 6 months; carry proof of onward travel and accommodation; if your stay reaches 10 days or more you must register with OVIR within 10 working days of arrival (hotels can no longer do this for you, though many arrange it for a fee); and a separate GBAO permit is required to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (the Pamir Highway).
