No visa is required. As an EU citizen, a Netherlands ordinary passport holder enjoys full freedom of movement and can enter Latvia (an EU/Schengen member) for tourism with just a valid passport or national ID card. There is no 90/180 limit and no ETIAS requirement for EU citizens. Both the Netherlands and Latvia are member states of the European Union and the Schengen Area. Under the EU principle of free movement of persons, Netherlands citizens have the right to enter, travel and stay in Latvia without a visa and without any pre-travel authorisation. A valid Dutch passport or national identity card is sufficient to cross the border (in practice there are no systematic internal Schengen border checks). The Schengen 90/180-day short-stay rule applies to non-EU visa-exempt visitors, NOT to EU citizens — Dutch nationals are not bound by it and may stay longer than 90 days, though stays beyond three months trigger an EU-law registration formality with local authorities. ETIAS, expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026, applies only to non-EU visa-exempt nationals; EU citizens including the Dutch are exempt. No fee, no application, and no processing time apply to this route.
