Malaysian ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourism in New Caledonia. You may enter visa-free and stay up to 3 months within any 6-month period. New Caledonia is a French overseas collectivity in the South Pacific, but it is NOT part of the Schengen Area and applies its own visa policy, separate from mainland France. Malaysia is on New Caledonia's short-stay visa-exemption list, so Malaysian ordinary passport holders can travel for tourism without any visa, eVisa, or pre-travel authorization. The permitted stay is up to 3 months within any 6-month (180-day) period. Critically, because New Caledonia is outside Schengen, the EU ETIAS scheme (rolling out for Malaysians on the Schengen Area from late 2026) does NOT apply here, and a Schengen visa does not by itself grant entry. Travelers must hold a passport issued less than 10 years ago and valid at least 3 months beyond the planned departure date, with at least two blank pages. Travel insurance covering medical care and repatriation is mandatory, and proof of onward/return travel plus sufficient funds may be checked at the border. There is no government fee for visa-free entry. If you intend to stay longer than 3 months, work, study, or settle, a long-stay visa must be obtained in advance through France-Visas / VFS Global before departure.
