As of February 16, 2026, Mexican ordinary passport holders need a visa to enter Nicaragua. Mexico was moved into the "consulted visa" (visa consultada / Category C) list under Provision 002-2026 and lost the visa-free access it previously enjoyed. You must obtain prior authorization from Nicaragua's immigration authority (DGME) in Managua before you travel; the process was digitized in March 2026 and is initiated by email/online, with passport stamping at a consulate after approval. Until early 2026, Mexican citizens could enter Nicaragua visa-free for up to 90 days, paying only a US$10 tourist card on arrival. That changed on February 16, 2026, when Nicaragua's Ministry of the Interior (MINT) enacted Provision (Disposicion) 002-2026, which scrapped the old consular "B" visa, expanded the "consulted visa" (Category C, "visa consultada") list to 128 nationalities, and largely ended visa-on-arrival. Mexico, Peru and Colombia were among the countries shifted into Category C. A consulted visa is not a simple online sticker: the application is reviewed and approved directly by the General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners (DGME) in Managua. The applicant completes the official form, sends it with a scan of the passport biodata page (minimum 6 months validity) to the institutional channel (solicitudes@mint.gob.ni), and once authorized is notified by email to attend a Nicaraguan consulate for passport stamping. In March 2026 the process was digitized so much of it can be completed online. Because approval rests entirely with Managua and is not guaranteed, travelers should apply well in advance. A US$10 tourist card is still collected on arrival, and the authorized tourist stay is up to 90 days (extendable by 30 days for a fee). Always confirm current requirements with a Nicaraguan consulate before booking, as this policy is new and still being implemented.
