Mexican ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa to visit Iceland for tourism. Iceland is part of the Schengen Area, and Mexico is on the Schengen visa-exempt list, so you may enter for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. From late 2026, you will also need an ETIAS travel authorization (about EUR 20, online), but it is not a visa. Iceland is a member of the Schengen Area (as one of the four EFTA states inside Schengen). Mexico is on the EU list of visa-exempt third countries (Annex II), so holders of ordinary Mexican passports can travel to Iceland and the wider Schengen Area for tourism, business, or family visits without a Schengen short-stay visa. The permitted stay is a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period, counted across all Schengen countries combined. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended date of departure from the Schengen Area and have been issued within the previous 10 years. At the border you may be asked to show proof of accommodation, sufficient funds, a return or onward ticket, and travel medical insurance. The main upcoming change is ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System), expected to begin in the last quarter of 2026. Once live, visa-exempt nationals such as Mexicans must obtain an approved ETIAS before travelling; it costs around EUR 20, is completed online in minutes, is valid for three years (or until passport expiry) and allows multiple short stays. The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) also began rolling out in 2025, registering non-EU travellers biometrically at the border. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization, not a visa, and does not change Mexico's visa-free status. If you intend to stay longer than 90 days, work, or study, a national long-stay visa or residence permit from the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration is required instead.
