No visa is required. Mexican ordinary passport holders are classified as a Group 1 nationality by Costa Rica and may enter visa-free for tourism, with up to 180 days granted at the discretion of the immigration officer. Mexico is a Group 1 country under Costa Rica's visa policy (administered by the Direccion General de Migracion y Extranjeria, DGME), meaning ordinary Mexican passport holders need no visa for tourism and can be admitted for up to 180 days on arrival. Costa Rica is not part of the Schengen area, so no Schengen 90/180 rule or ETIAS applies. The November 2025 DGME directive (Alcance N. 148) tightened rules for certain Group 3/4 nationals relying on third-country visas, but Mexico's Group 1 visa-free status was unaffected. On arrival, travelers should hold a passport valid for at least one day (six months is the widely recommended safe practice), proof of onward or return travel, proof of sufficient funds, and accommodation details. The granted stay is a ceiling set at the officer's discretion, not a guarantee; overstays incur fines and can complicate future entries. There is no entry visa fee, though Costa Rica charges an exit/departure tax that is usually bundled into the air ticket.
