Japanese ordinary passport holders do not need a visa for short tourist visits to Greenland and may stay up to 90 days. Greenland is not part of the EU or the Schengen Area, so no ETIAS or Schengen visa is needed, but a valid passport is mandatory. Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark but is outside both the European Union and the Schengen Area, so it runs its own short-stay entry rules administered through the Danish Immigration Service (Nyidanmark). Nationals of countries that are visa-exempt for short Schengen stays — which includes Japan — may enter Greenland without a visa for tourism for up to 90 days. Importantly, this is a Greenland-specific exemption: a separately issued Schengen visa for Denmark or another Schengen state is NOT valid for Greenland, and visa-required nationals must obtain a visa specifically endorsed for Greenland. Because Greenland is not in Schengen, the European ETIAS travel authorisation (rolling out for the Schengen Area from late 2026) does not apply to Greenland for Japanese travelers. Japanese citizens simply need a valid passport (a national ID card is not accepted), proof of return/onward travel and sufficient funds. The 90-day allowance is for tourism/short visits only and does not grant the right to work or reside; longer stays or work require separate permits. Travelers connecting through Denmark or another Schengen country en route should note that Japan is also visa-free for Schengen short stays, and the Schengen 90/180 rule is counted separately from time spent in Greenland.
