Japanese passport holders need a visa for Ghana, but as of 25 May 2026 they can apply online through Ghana's new e-Visa portal instead of visiting an embassy. The free ETA channel is reserved for African and Caribbean nationals, so Japanese travelers must pay the standard e-Visa fee (from USD 260 single-entry). A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory. Ghana is not visa-free for Japanese ordinary passport holders. Japan is not an ECOWAS member, an African Union state, or a qualifying Caribbean nation, so it is excluded from Ghana's visa-free and free-ETA arrangements. On 25 May 2026 the Ghana Immigration Service, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, launched a new official e-Visa portal (evisa.immigration.gov.gh) covering 190+ nationalities including Japan. Japanese travelers should apply for a single-entry tourist e-Visa online, pay the fee (USD 260 standard, with faster paid tiers), and receive the e-Visa by email, typically within 72-96 hours. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for all arrivals. Travelers should carry a printed copy of the e-Visa and a passport valid for at least six months. Because the portal is new, applicants should verify fees and document lists on the official site at the time of application and allow buffer time before departure.
