Japanese passport holders need a Cuba e-Visa for tourism. Since 1 July 2025 the e-Visa replaced the old paper tourist card for nearly all nationalities. Apply online at evisacuba.cu before you fly, then complete the D'Viajeros entry form within 7 days of arrival and carry proof of medical insurance. Cuba is not visa-free for Japanese ordinary passport holders. Effective 1 July 2025, Cuba ended the traditional Tarjeta del Turista (tourist card) and made an electronic visa (e-Visa) mandatory for nearly all international visitors, including Japanese citizens. The e-Visa is obtained online in advance through the official government portal at evisacuba.cu. It is a single-entry permit allowing a stay of up to 90 days, extendable once inside Cuba for a further 90 days (180 days total). The official fee is around US$50, with processing typically within 72 working hours. The only notable exception is Canadian citizens flying directly from Canada, for whom the levy is bundled into the airfare. Separately, every traveler (including e-Visa holders) must complete the free D'Viajeros online declaration (dviajeros.mitrans.gob.cu) within 7 days before arrival, and Cuba requires proof of travel medical insurance plus a passport valid 6 months beyond the stay. Cuba is in the Caribbean and is not part of the Schengen area, so Schengen 90/180 and ETIAS rules do not apply. Because no confirmed visa-free channel exists for Japanese passports, the correct verdict for a short tourist stay is e-Visa.
