Japanese ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourism in Chile. They may stay up to 90 days under the Permanencia Transitoria (tourist) permit, with no advance application and no reciprocity fee. Japan and Chile have had a mutual visa-waiver arrangement since 1969. Holders of an ordinary Japanese passport are granted visa-free entry to Chile for tourism, business, or family visits for up to 90 days. On arrival, the Policia de Investigaciones (PDI) issues a Tarjeta Unica Migratoria (the digital tourist card/PDI slip), which must be kept and surrendered on exit. Chile is NOT part of the Schengen area, so no ETIAS or Schengen 90/180 rule applies. Chile abolished its reciprocity entry fee in 2014, and in any case it never applied to Japanese nationals, so entry is free of charge. Travelers should hold a passport valid for the duration of stay (six months' validity is recommended as good practice), proof of onward or return travel, evidence of sufficient funds, and accommodation details, as these can be checked by immigration officers. The 90-day stay can be extended once for a further 90 days by paying a fee at the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (SERMIG), or refreshed by exiting and re-entering.
