Italian passport holders need a visa to enter Mali for tourism. There is no visa-free entry, no eVisa, and no visa-on-arrival for EU citizens — you must apply in person (or by mail) at a Malian embassy or consulate before you travel, and present a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate on arrival. As of June 2026, Mali is not visa-free for Italian (or any EU) ordinary passport holders. Mali's visa-exemption list is limited to ECOWAS member states and a short set of partner countries (e.g. Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Tunisia, Chad, Cameroon, UAE, Hong Kong, Macao); Italy is not included. Visa-on-arrival is available only to Rwandan nationals, and there is no general official eVisa for tourism, so Italians must obtain a sticker visa from a Malian diplomatic mission in advance. Italy has no resident Malian embassy in Rome for routine visa issuance, so applications are normally handled by the Embassy of Mali in Paris (accredited to Italy) or another competent mission. A short-stay tourist visa is typically issued single- or multiple-entry, valid for stays of up to 30 or 90 days, with consular fees in the region of EUR 80-130. A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry. Mali is not in the Schengen area, so Schengen 90/180 and ETIAS rules do not apply to this route. Note also a heightened security context: many foreign ministries advise against travel to large parts of Mali. Always confirm current requirements with the competent Malian mission before booking.
