Israeli ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for short tourist stays in Romania. They may enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Romania became a full member of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025 (air and sea borders opened 31 March 2024). Holders of an Israeli ordinary (biometric) passport are visa-exempt and may visit Romania and the wider Schengen Area for tourism for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period, with no advance visa or application required. Because Romania is now in Schengen, days spent in Romania count toward the combined Schengen 90/180 allowance shared with all other Schengen states. Two new EU border systems affect travelers: the Entry/Exit System (EES), which records biometric data (facial image and fingerprints) at external Schengen borders and is being phased in from 12 October 2025 to full operation by 10 April 2026; and ETIAS, a pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals (including Israelis) that is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026 and become mandatory thereafter. As of the date of this guide (mid-2026), ETIAS is NOT yet required, so Israeli tourists can still travel to Romania on a passport alone. Passports should be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date and issued within the previous 10 years.
