Indonesian ordinary passport holders can get a Malawi Visa on Arrival for tourism. Since 24 February 2026, Malawi grants Visa on Arrival to "Category Two" nationals (Indonesia is in this group), available at all designated ports of entry. However, Malawi strongly encourages travelers to apply for the eVisa in advance at evisa.gov.mw to speed up entry. The standard tourist single-entry fee is USD 50. As of 1 June 2026, an Indonesian (ID) ordinary passport holder does NOT enter Malawi visa-free, but DOES qualify for a Visa on Arrival (VoA). Malawi classifies foreign nationals into Category One (must obtain a visa in advance, no VoA) and Category Two (eligible for Visa on Arrival). The Category One restricted list of nationalities beginning with "I" contains only India, Iran and Iraq; Indonesia is NOT on it, so Indonesians are Category Two. Effective 24 February 2026, Malawi made Category Two nationals eligible to obtain a Visa on Arrival at all designated ports of entry. The same visa is also offered as an eVisa through the official portal (evisa.gov.mw), which the Department of Immigration strongly recommends obtaining before departure to avoid delays and the risk of refusal at the border. The most common tourist product is a single-entry visa: USD 50, valid 3 months from issue, with a stay of up to about 30 days. Multiple-entry options exist (USD 150 for 6 months, USD 250 for 12 months). Malawi is in southern Africa and is NOT part of the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply. Because immigration officials retain the right to deny entry despite an approved visa, and because the VoA scheme is recent (Feb 2026), the safest practical course is to apply for the eVisa online in advance.
