Do Hong Kong passport holders need a visa to visit SZ?
Hong Kong SAR ordinary passport holders need a visa to enter eSwatini. Since August 2025 the most practical route is the official eSwatini eVisa (evisa.gov.sz); a paper visa from an eSwatini mission is the alternative. There is no visa-on-arrival and no visa-waiver for Hong Kong, even though eSwatini nationals can enter Hong Kong visa-free. The Kingdom of eSwatini grants visa-free entry to over 90 countries (most Commonwealth states, the USA, Japan, most EU members), but Hong Kong is not on that list. The Hong Kong Immigration Department explicitly confirms that "HKSAR passport holders currently require a visa to visit the Kingdom of eSwatini" — this followed a January 2024 arrangement that gave eSwatini nationals visa-free access to Hong Kong without a reciprocal benefit for Hong Kong travelers. In August 2025 eSwatini launched an online eVisa portal (evisa.gov.sz), which is now the most convenient channel for nationalities that require a visa. Applicants create an account, upload a passport bio-page and a square passport photo, provide travel and accommodation details, pay online, and receive an electronic visa by email. Fees are charged in Emalangeni (E/SZL, pegged 1:1 to the South African Rand): roughly E80 for a single entry, with multiple-entry options at higher cost. Visitors are generally admitted for up to 30 days, extendable once for a further 30 days at the Ministry of Home Affairs. Passports must be valid at least three months beyond the intended departure date. Because the portal is still relatively new and country eligibility can change, applicants should confirm Hong Kong's eVisa availability on the portal and, if unavailable, apply by paper through the eSwatini High Commission (most conveniently the mission in Pretoria, South Africa). Visa-on-arrival is not currently offered. Given conflicting third-party reports about which nationalities the portal accepts, travelers should verify before relying solely on the eVisa.
