Do Hong Kong passport holders need a visa to visit SE?
No visa needed. Hong Kong SAR ordinary passport holders can visit Sweden visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen Area. ETIAS travel authorisation is coming but is NOT yet mandatory as of 30 May 2026. Sweden is part of the Schengen Area, and holders of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) ordinary passport enjoy visa-free entry for short stays. The Swedish government's official Sweden Abroad portal for Hong Kong confirms that HKSAR (and Macao SAR and BNO) passport holders do not need a visa to visit Sweden as a tourist and may stay for a maximum of 90 days. This falls under the standard Schengen short-stay rule: up to 90 days of stay within any rolling 180-day period, counted cumulatively across all Schengen member states (not Sweden alone). No advance application is currently required to enter. Two new EU border systems affect this route. The Entry/Exit System (EES) began phased rollout from 12 October 2025 and replaces manual passport stamping with biometric registration (fingerprints and facial image) at the external Schengen border; it does not require any pre-application. The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a pre-travel authorisation that visa-exempt nationals, including HKSAR passport holders, will need to obtain online before departure. ETIAS is expected to become operational in the last quarter of 2026 with a transitional/grace period, and is anticipated to become mandatory in 2027. As of 30 May 2026 ETIAS is NOT yet required, so HKSAR travellers can still board and enter with just a valid passport. Travellers should confirm ETIAS status close to their departure date, as the launch timeline has shifted several times. The passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the intended date of departure from the Schengen Area and issued within the previous 10 years.
