Do Hong Kong passport holders need a visa to visit NL?
No visa needed. HKSAR ordinary passport holders can enter the Netherlands visa-free for tourism for up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Hong Kong SAR ordinary passport holders enjoy visa-free access to the Netherlands and the wider Schengen area for short stays. You may stay for a maximum of 90 days within any rolling 180-day period for tourism, business, family visits, or transit, counted cumulatively across all Schengen countries (not just the Netherlands). No advance application is required today: you simply present a valid passport at the border. The Netherlands is a founding Schengen member, so the same rule applies whether you land in Amsterdam (Schiphol) or arrive overland from another Schengen state. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure and issued within the last 10 years. Border officers may still ask for proof of onward/return travel, accommodation, and sufficient funds. Looking ahead, the EU's ETIAS travel authorisation (a roughly EUR 7 online pre-screening, not a visa) is being rolled out: it is expected to begin a voluntary/transitional phase in late 2026 and become mandatory for visa-exempt travellers, including HKSAR passport holders, from around 2027. Until ETIAS becomes mandatory, no online authorisation is needed. Always confirm the latest status before booking, as the EU has shifted ETIAS dates several times.
