Do Hong Kong passport holders need a visa to visit KP?
A Hong Kong ordinary passport holder needs a visa to visit North Korea (DPRK). There is no visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or eVisa channel. Note that as of May 2026 general tourism remains suspended and tourist visas are not being issued to the public. Holders of Hong Kong SAR ordinary passports require a visa to enter North Korea. All ordinary-passport holders (except South Korean nationals, who are barred) must obtain a visa in advance, and tourism is only possible through a tour booked with an agency registered with North Korea's State General Bureau of Tourist Guidance. The visa is issued as a separate tourist card rather than a passport stamp, and the tour operator handles the application with the DPRK authorities. Crucially, as of May 30-31 2026, North Korea remains effectively closed to international tourism: a brief reopening of the Rason Special Economic Zone in February-March 2025 was suspended on 5 March 2025, the April 2026 Pyongyang Marathon was cancelled, and the only nationals currently permitted limited entry are Russians. Tourist visas are therefore not currently being issued to Hong Kong or most other passport holders, though wider reopening is anticipated. The verdict is visa-required: a Hong Kong traveler cannot enter on a no-visa basis and must, once tourism resumes, secure a visa exclusively through an authorized tour operator. There is no Schengen relevance, as North Korea is not part of the Schengen area.
