Holders of an ordinary HKSAR passport need a visa for Burundi. The simplest route is the official online visa (eVisa) at migration.gov.bi, costing USD 90 for a single- or multiple-entry visa valid for up to 1 month. A visa on arrival at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport (Bujumbura) is also available at the same USD 90 fee. Only Burundi diplomatic/official/service passports of Hong Kong are visa-exempt (14 days) — this does NOT apply to ordinary passports. A HK ordinary (SAR) passport holder is not visa-exempt for Burundi. Burundi waives visas only for six neighbouring East African nationalities (DR Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda) and, for Hong Kong, only for diplomatic, official or service passport holders (14 days). Ordinary HK passport holders must obtain a visa. Burundi's Commissariat Général des Migrations (CGM) operates an official online visa portal (migration.gov.bi) where travellers can apply before departure. The standard tourist/business visa is USD 90 and grants up to 1 month's stay; a single-entry and a multiple-entry version (the latter renewable up to twice, for a 90-day maximum) are both priced at USD 90. The same visa can alternatively be obtained on arrival at Melchior Ndadaye (Bujumbura) International Airport or at land/lake borders for USD 90 cash, plus a 72-hour transit visa option at USD 40. A passport valid at least 6 months with a blank page is required, and a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from or transiting an endemic country. Because the official portal lets you secure the visa and a printed approval before you fly — reducing airport risk — the eVisa is the recommended channel, though VOA remains a valid fallback. Fees are payable in USD or EUR.
