UK ordinary passport holders need an e-visa to visit Mauritania. Visa on arrival ended on 5 January 2025, so you must apply online via the official ANRPTS portal and have an approved e-visa before boarding your flight. British citizens require a visa to enter Mauritania for tourism, and as of 5 January 2025 the only route for a short visit is the electronic visa (e-visa). Visa on arrival has been abolished and Mauritanian embassies (including London) no longer issue visas - they direct all applicants to the online system run by the Agence Nationale du Registre des Populations et des Titres Securises (ANRPTS) at anrpts.gov.mr. You must apply online, receive approval, and print your e-visa confirmation before boarding, because airlines will check it at check-in. The e-visa is typically single entry, permits a stay of up to 30 days, and the fee (about EUR 55 / USD 60) is generally paid in exact cash in euros or US dollars on arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. Travellers arriving from a yellow fever risk country must also present a vaccination certificate. Mauritania is in West Africa and is not part of the Schengen area, so Schengen 90/180 and ETIAS rules do not apply.
