UK ordinary passport holders do not need a visa to visit Iceland for tourism. You can stay in Iceland and the wider Schengen area for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. As of 30 May 2026, no ETIAS travel authorisation is required yet (ETIAS launch is expected in Q4 2026, followed by a transitional grace period). The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) biometric registration applies at the border but is free. Iceland is a member of the Schengen area, and British citizens (ordinary passports) enjoy visa-free entry for short stays. You may stay up to 90 days within any 180-day window for tourism, visiting family/friends, or business, with days pooled across all Schengen countries. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years on the day you arrive and be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area. There is no application or fee for a short tourist trip today. Two new EU systems affect this route: the Entry/Exit System (EES), which records biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) at the external border and is being rolled out from late 2025 with full application from 10 April 2026 (free, done at the border), and ETIAS, an electronic travel authorisation costing EUR 20 that is expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026 with a transitional grace period afterward. ETIAS is NOT a visa and is NOT yet required as of 30 May 2026, so a UK traveller departing now needs only a valid passport. Travellers planning trips in late 2026 onward should check whether ETIAS has gone live before booking.
