Do United Kingdom passport holders need a visa to visit GH?
UK ordinary passport holders need a visa to enter Ghana for tourism. Since 25 May 2026 the recommended route is the official Ghana Immigration Service eVisa (evisa.immigration.gov.gh), applied for and paid online before travel. Ghana's 2025-2026 visa-free policy applies only to African passport holders, not to UK citizens. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry. A British citizen with an ordinary passport requires a visa to visit Ghana for tourism or a short stay; there is no visa-free or visa-waiver arrangement for UK nationals. On 25 May 2026 Ghana inaugurated a national e-Visa platform (evisa.immigration.gov.gh), operated by the Ghana Immigration Service with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is now the standard pre-travel route and which discontinued the older visa-on-arrival arrangement for most travellers. The much-publicised 2025-2026 free/visa-free regime is limited to citizens of African countries and does not extend to UK passport holders, who must still apply and pay before boarding. Applicants create an account, complete the form, upload a passport bio-page and photo, pay online, and receive an electronic authorisation by email to present at Kotoka International Airport. A standard single-entry visitor visa typically permits up to 60 days per stay; a single-entry visa is valid for around 3 months from issue while multiple-entry visas can run up to 12 months. Applications may also be lodged in person at the Ghana High Commission in London. A yellow fever vaccination certificate (administered at least 10 days before arrival) is compulsory, and the passport must be valid for at least 6 months with a blank page. Allow roughly 5-10 working days for online processing. Conservatively, the correct verdict for a UK tourist is eVisa (visa required, obtained electronically).
