Do United Kingdom passport holders need a visa to visit BE?
No visa needed. UK ordinary passport holders can visit Belgium (a Schengen country) visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism. As of 31 May 2026, ETIAS is not yet required, but the EES biometric border system is already operating. British citizens holding an ordinary passport do not need a visa for short tourist stays in Belgium. Belgium is part of the Schengen Area, and UK nationals are visa-exempt for stays of up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period for tourism, family or business visits, cultural events and short-term study. The UK government and EU rules confirm this status. Two recent EU changes affect UK travellers: the Entry/Exit System (EES) went live on 10 April 2026, meaning fingerprints and a facial photo are collected at the external Schengen border on first entry (registration is free and stored for 3 years); and ETIAS, a roughly EUR 20 travel authorisation valid 3 years, is scheduled to launch in Q4 2026 with a transitional period, so it is NOT yet mandatory as of 31 May 2026. Passport rules apply: it must have been issued within the last 10 years and be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date from Schengen. Border officers may ask for proof of onward travel and sufficient funds. Days spent in any other Schengen state count toward the 90-day allowance, and overstaying can lead to fines or an entry ban of up to 3 years.
