Do United Kingdom passport holders need a visa to visit AT?
UK ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa to visit Austria for tourism. Austria is in the Schengen Area, so you can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period visa-free. ETIAS (a EUR 20 travel authorisation) is expected in late 2026 but is NOT yet required as of 31 May 2026. British (GB) citizens holding an ordinary passport can travel to Austria for tourism, family/friend visits, business meetings or short-term study without a visa. Because Austria is a Schengen member, the UK enjoys visa-free short-stay access for up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period; days spent in any other Schengen country count toward the same allowance. There is no entry fee at present. Two EU border systems affect UK travellers: the Entry/Exit System (EES), the biometric border-registration system that began phased rollout in late 2025 and reached full operation in 2026, which simply records entries/exits at the border at no cost; and ETIAS, a EUR 20 online travel authorisation expected to launch in the last quarter of 2026 with a transitional grace period into 2027. As of 31 May 2026, ETIAS is NOT yet mandatory, so no pre-travel authorisation is needed today. Passports must have been issued within the last 10 years and remain valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area. Border officers may ask for proof of onward/return travel, accommodation, sufficient funds and travel insurance. If you intend to work, stay longer than 90 days, or take up residence, a national visa or permit is required instead.
