Do France passport holders need a visa to visit SE?
No visa needed. French citizens have EU freedom of movement and can enter Sweden for tourism with no visa and no time limit, using a valid passport or national ID card. France and Sweden are both European Union member states and part of the Schengen Area. As an EU citizen, a French ordinary passport holder exercises the right of free movement and may travel, enter, and stay in Sweden without any visa, entry permit, or prior authorisation, and without a time limit for short tourist visits. A valid French passport or national identity card is sufficient for entry. Because France is an EU country, the Schengen 90/180-day short-stay cap that applies to non-EU visa-exempt nationals does NOT restrict French citizens. Likewise, the upcoming ETIAS travel authorisation (expected to launch in late 2026) and the Entry/Exit System (EES, live from 10 April 2026) apply only to non-EU nationals — EU citizens including the French are fully exempt. The only practical requirement is carrying a valid government-issued travel document; for stays in Sweden longer than three months, EU citizens have an automatic right of residence but should be aware of registration/residence formalities, which fall outside a short tourist visit.
