French ordinary passport holders need a visa to enter Libya. Since 21 March 2024 Libya offers an online tourist eVisa (single entry, up to 30 days, ~USD 63), but in practice it must be arranged through a Libyan tour operator or local sponsor who initiates the application. A traditional sticker visa from the Libyan Embassy in Paris is also available. Note: the French Foreign Ministry formally advises against all travel to Libya for security reasons. Libya is not a Schengen state and grants no visa waiver to French nationals (only Algerians and Tunisians enter visa-free). A France ordinary passport holder must hold a visa before arrival. Libya launched an eVisa system on 21 March 2024 (evisa.gov.ly): the tourist eVisa is single entry, valid 90 days from issue, permits a stay of up to 30 days, and costs about USD 63. Processing typically runs 5-7 business days. In practice almost all foreign tourists must be sponsored by a registered Libyan tour operator or local sponsor, who lodges or backs the application; independent tourist applications are routinely refused. Travellers must also carry proof of at least 1,000 Libyan Dinars on arrival and a passport valid 6+ months. A separate sticker visa can be obtained from the Embassy of Libya in Paris after Ministry of Foreign Affairs approval. Critically, France Diplomatie (last updated 2026) formally discourages all travel to Libya due to terrorism, armed conflict and kidnapping risk, and any passport bearing an Israeli stamp or visa is refused entry.
