No visa needed. France is an EU member state, so French citizens have EU/EEA freedom of movement and can enter Iceland visa-free with a valid passport or national ID card. There is no 90-day cap for EU citizens, and EU nationals are exempt from ETIAS. A France ordinary passport holder does NOT need a visa to visit Iceland. Both France and Iceland are part of the European Economic Area (EEA), and Iceland is also in the Schengen Area. Under EU/EEA freedom of movement rules, French citizens may enter and stay in Iceland for tourism or any short visit using either a valid passport or a valid national identity card. The Schengen 90-days-in-180 short-stay limit applies to non-EU/EEA visa-exempt nationals, not to EU/EEA citizens exercising free movement, so a French national is not bound by it for tourist visits. The travel document only needs to be valid on the day of travel. The new ETIAS pre-travel authorization, expected to launch around late 2026 for visa-exempt non-EU travelers, does NOT apply to EU/EEA citizens including French nationals. Iceland may temporarily reintroduce internal border checks under Schengen rules, so carrying a valid ID document is always advised even though there are normally no checks between Schengen states.
