Do France passport holders need a visa to visit IQ?
French passport holders need an Iraq e-Visa, obtained online before travel via the official portal evisa.iq. Visa-on-arrival was suspended for French (and 36 other) nationals on 1 March 2025. The Iraqi Kurdistan Region is a separate exception with its own visa system. A French ordinary passport holder cannot travel to Federal Iraq without a visa and can no longer obtain one on arrival. Since 1 March 2025, Iraq suspended visa-on-arrival for 37 nationalities (including France) and now requires an electronic visa (e-Visa) applied for in advance through the official government portal evisa.iq (application gateway eservice.evisa.iq). The e-Visa is single-entry and permits a stay of up to 60 days; the total cost is approximately 206,000 IQD (about 145 EUR / 158 USD), which bundles the visa fee with mandatory health insurance. Standard processing is about 24 to 48 hours. The passport must be valid at least six months beyond the intended stay, and proof of onward travel is expected. A separate, distinct regime applies to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI): travellers going exclusively to Kurdistan can obtain a 30-day visa on arrival at KRI airports or the Ibrahim Khalil land border from Turkey (around 103,000 IQD, prepaid online via visit.gov.krd) — but this Kurdistan visa is not valid for Federal Iraq. Overstays in Federal Iraq incur a 500,000 IQD penalty plus 10,000 IQD per extra day. Iraq is not in the Schengen area, so the 90/180 short-stay rule and ETIAS do not apply.
