Do France passport holders need a visa to visit BG?
No visa. As an EU citizen, a French ordinary passport holder can enter Bulgaria visa-free for any length of stay under EU freedom of movement. Bulgaria has been a full Schengen member since 1 January 2025. France and Bulgaria are both European Union member states, so a French ordinary passport holder travels to Bulgaria exercising the EU right of free movement under Directive 2004/38/EC. No visa is required for any purpose, and there is no time limit on a tourist visit (the Schengen 90/180-day short-stay rule applies only to non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals, not to EU citizens). A valid French passport or national ID card is sufficient to enter. Bulgaria became a full member of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025, when internal land border controls were lifted (air and sea controls had already been removed on 31 March 2024), so travel between France and Bulgaria is now generally free of systematic border checks. ETIAS, the EU travel authorisation expected to launch in late 2026, does not apply to EU citizens such as French nationals, so no ETIAS or any pre-travel authorisation is needed. French citizens staying in Bulgaria beyond three months for work, study or residence may need to complete a simple registration formality with local authorities, but this is not a visa.
