French ordinary passport holders need a visa for Burkina Faso. The standard route for tourism is the official eVisa, applied for online before travel at visaburkina.bf. France is not on Burkina Faso's visa-exempt list, and visa-on-arrival is now granted only in exceptional cases, so secure your visa before departure. France is not among the nationalities exempt from a Burkina Faso visa (the exempt list is limited to ECOWAS/AES states and a handful of others such as the UAE, Morocco, Singapore and Hong Kong). Since the launch of the national eVisa portal (17 August 2023), the recommended and most reliable channel for a French tourist is the online short-term eVisa, which permits a stay of up to 90 days. Visa-on-arrival, which EU citizens could once use, is now issued only in exceptional circumstances and should not be relied upon. Applicants who prefer can also apply through a Burkina Faso diplomatic mission. Beyond visa formalities, travelers should note that Burkina Faso has serious security concerns; France and most Western governments advise against travel to large parts of the country. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry. Burkina Faso is in West Africa and is not part of the Schengen area, so Schengen 90/180 and ETIAS rules do not apply to this destination.
