Do Finland passport holders need a visa to visit MG?

Finnish passport holders need a visa for Madagascar but do not have to visit an embassy. You can apply online for an eVisa before departure (recommended) or obtain a visa on arrival at any international airport. The tourist eVisa is single-entry, and a 1-15 day stay costs about EUR 25 (USD 27). Madagascar is not part of the Schengen area, so the EU 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply here. Madagascar maintains a near-universal visa-required policy: citizens of every country except Burundi and Palestine, including Finland, can enter only with a visa, but it is issued either electronically before travel or on arrival rather than via a consulate. The recommended route for Finnish tourists is the official eVisa (evisamada.gov.mg), a non-immigrant, single-entry electronic authorization issued by the border police and valid for a stay of up to 60 days. Applicants register online, complete the form, select a duration band, pay, and receive the authorization, typically within 72 hours. Visa on arrival remains available at the eVisa counters at Ivato (Antananarivo) and other international airports for travelers who have not applied online, covering stays up to 90 days. Fees are charged by duration band: 1-15 days EUR 25 / USD 27, 16-30 days EUR 35 / USD 41, 31-60 days EUR 40 / USD 47, 61-90 days EUR 50 / USD 59. A fee restructuring took effect in February 2026; some reports also cite a separate small tourist tax for the shortest arrival visas. A passport valid at least six months with blank pages, proof of onward/return travel, and proof of accommodation are expected at the border. Because Finland has no Madagascar embassy presence and consular representation is handled via France, the online eVisa is the most reliable and convenient option for Finnish travelers.

by frequency
/01
Universal visa-required policy
Madagascar requires a visa from nationals of every country except Burundi and Palestine; there is no visa-free channel for Finns.
High
/02
Tourism / short visit
Tourist visits are exactly what the eVisa and visa-on-arrival system is designed for, so the short-stay tourist visa applies.
High
/03
No embassy step required
Finland has no Madagascar embassy and is represented via France, making the online eVisa the practical default rather than a consular visa.
Medium
/04
2026 fee restructuring
Fees were revised in February 2026, so older guides quoting USD 10 for 15 days are outdated.
Medium
/05
Document checks at border
Onward ticket and accommodation proof are commonly requested, so missing documents can cause issues on arrival.
