Finnish passport holders do not need a visa for tourism in Costa Rica. As an EU citizen, Finland is in Costa Rica's Group 1, granting visa-free entry for up to 180 days on arrival. Finland (FI) ordinary passport holders are visa-free for tourist visits to Costa Rica. Finland sits in Costa Rica's most favourable "Group 1" category (which covers all EU member states), allowing a stay of up to 180 calendar days, non-extendable, granted as an entry stamp by the immigration officer. No advance visa, eVisa, or ETA is required. The passport need only be valid for at least one day on arrival, though carriers and airlines typically expect more validity. Costa Rica's Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería published updated guidelines on 17 November 2025 that kept the four-group system intact; the 180-day visa-free status for EU/Group 1 nationals (including Finland) is unchanged. Travellers should still carry proof of onward/return travel and proof of economic means (a minimum of US$100 per month or fraction of the planned stay), as officers may request these at entry. Note Costa Rica is in Central America, not in the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply to this route.
