Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit TD?
German ordinary passport holders need a visa to enter Chad for tourism. Chad now requires an electronic visa (eVisa) obtained in advance through the official government portal evisa.td; paper visas issued outside the platform are no longer valid. Germany is not on Chad's short list of visa-exempt countries, so German tourists must hold a valid visa before arrival. Since 11 December 2024 Chad has operated an electronic visa system, and as of 2026 all ordinary visa categories (tourist, business, transit) must be applied for online via the official portal evisa.td. Visas issued through embassies on paper outside the digital platform are being phased out and invalidated, so the eVisa is effectively the standard channel for German travelers. The application requires a passport valid at least six months at the time of application (and for the full stay), a passport bio-page scan, a passport photo, proof of accommodation, and a return/onward ticket or proof of funds. The German Federal Foreign Office advises applying online at least seven days before travel; applications cannot be lodged more than 90 days before the intended entry date. Note that all visitors must complete police registration within 72 hours of arrival, and travelers entering overland additionally need an "autorisation de circuler" (movement authorization). Chad is not a Schengen state, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply. Travelers should also review the German Foreign Office security advisory: a state of emergency applies in the Lac province (since May 2026) and the Sudan border has been closed since February 2026.
