German ordinary passport holders need a visa for Malawi. Since 3 January 2026 Malawi revoked the short-lived visa-free exemption, so Germans should apply online for an eVisa before travel (single-entry tourist eVisa USD 50). Visa on arrival is also available as a fallback. Malawi briefly granted visa-free access to 48 countries (including Germany) from February 2024, but the Immigration (Amendment) Regulations effective 3 January 2026 reversed this for most of those countries. As of 2026-05-31, a German ordinary passport holder traveling to Malawi for tourism requires a visa. The recommended route is the electronic visa applied for in advance through the official portal at evisa.gov.mw. A single-entry tourist eVisa costs USD 50 and permits a stay of up to 90 days; multiple-entry options (6 months USD 150, 12 months USD 250) and a 7-day transit visa (USD 50) are also offered. Visa on arrival remains available at designated ports of entry for travelers who have not applied online, at the same fee schedule, but applying online in advance is strongly recommended to avoid delays. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months with two blank pages. Malawi is in Southern Africa and is not part of the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply.
