German (DE) ordinary passport holders need a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before traveling for tourism. In 2025 Kenya removed the eTA requirement for nationals of nearly all African countries and most Caribbean states (visa-free entry for up to 60 days, or up to 6 months for East African Community citizens), but Germany is NOT covered by these exemptions. German ordinary passport holders must therefore apply for and pay for a Kenya eTA. The eTA is applied for at the official government portal etakenya.go.ke (third-party sites charge mark-ups and risk rejection). The official base fee is USD 30 for the standard tourist eTA, with an additional card-processing surcharge of roughly USD 9 when paying by credit card. Standard processing is typically around 3 business days; applicants are advised to apply at least 2 weeks before travel. The eTA permits a single entry and a stay of up to 90 days, and the passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival. Kenya is in East Africa, not the Schengen area, so the Schengen 90/180 rule and ETIAS do not apply to this route.
