Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit IS?

No visa needed. German citizens can travel to Iceland visa-free under EU/EEA free movement, using a valid passport or national ID card, with no fixed stay limit for tourism. Germany and Iceland are both members of the EU/EEA and the Schengen Area. As an EU citizen, a German ordinary passport holder enjoys full freedom of movement and can enter Iceland for tourism, visits, study, work, or residence with no visa or prior authorization. Entry is permitted with either a valid German passport or a national identity card (Personalausweis). Because Iceland is inside the Schengen Area and both countries are EEA members, the 90/180-day Schengen short-stay cap does NOT restrict German nationals - EU/EEA citizens have an unconditional right of entry and may stay beyond 90 days (registration may be required for stays over three months if establishing residence). The upcoming ETIAS travel authorization (voluntary rollout expected Q4 2026, mandatory from 2027) does NOT apply to EU/EEA citizens - Germans are explicitly exempt and will never need ETIAS for Iceland. Travel documents of EEA citizens only need to be valid for the duration of the stay, a more relaxed rule than the three-months-beyond-departure requirement applied to non-EEA travelers. Airlines and carriers will still ask to see a passport or ID card to confirm identity at check-in and boarding.
