As of 2026-05-30, Germany is on Guatemala's visa-exemption list (all EU member states), so a German ordinary passport holder traveling for tourism does not require a visa. Entry is granted on arrival with a passport stamp for a stay of up to 90 days. Crucially, this 90-day period is governed by the Central America-4 (CA-4) Border Control Agreement and applies to the combined time spent across Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, not per country. The German Federal Foreign Office confirms no visa is needed for stays up to 90 days and stresses that the entry stamp must be obtained on arrival, otherwise a time-consuming in-person administrative process in Guatemala City is required. Travelers should carry a passport valid for the stay (six months' validity is the widely recommended standard), proof of onward/return travel, evidence of sufficient funds and accommodation. Extensions of up to a further 90 days can be requested from the Guatemalan immigration authority (Instituto Guatemalteco de Migracion). Guatemala is not in the Schengen area, so Schengen 90/180 and ETIAS rules do not apply to this route.
