Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit GL?
German ordinary passport holders do not need a visa to visit Greenland for tourism and can stay up to 90 days. Greenland is NOT part of the Schengen Area or the EU, so a Schengen visa does not cover it and ETIAS does not apply to Greenland itself. Carry a valid passport. Germany is a visa-exempt nationality for Greenland. Although Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, it lies outside the European Union and the Schengen Area. Under Greenland's visa policy, nationals who may enter Denmark visa-free for short stays (all EU/Schengen states plus Schengen Annex II countries) may also visit Greenland without a visa for up to 90 days. German citizens therefore travel visa-free for tourism, requiring only a valid passport. Two important nuances apply: (1) A Schengen or Danish visa is NOT valid for entry to Greenland; visa-nationals need a visa specifically endorsed for Greenland. This does not affect Germans, who are visa-exempt. (2) ETIAS, the EU travel authorisation expected to apply from the last quarter of 2026, covers the Schengen Area and does not extend to Greenland, so no ETIAS is needed for Greenland itself. Travellers routing through mainland Denmark (Copenhagen) move within the Kingdom of Denmark; document checks between Greenland and the Schengen Area are generally not performed, though valid ID/passport should always be carried. Recommended passport validity is at least three months beyond the intended departure. No fees apply for visa-free entry.
