Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit CR?
German ordinary passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourism in Costa Rica. Germany is in Costa Rica's Group 1, allowing visa-free entry for up to 180 days. Germany is classified in Group 1 under Costa Rica's visa policy, the most privileged tier, so German ordinary passport holders can travel to Costa Rica for tourism without any visa. The maximum permitted visa-free stay is up to 180 days, though the exact number of days granted is at the discretion of the immigration officer at the port of entry (the 180-day figure is a ceiling, not a guarantee). No advance application, eVisa, ETA, or visa-on-arrival is required. The November 2025 update by the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería refined entry rules for Group 3 and Group 4 nationals (allowing some to enter on valid US, Canadian, or Schengen visas) but did not affect Group 1 nationals such as Germans. At immigration, travelers should be prepared to show a passport valid on arrival (Costa Rica technically requires validity for at least one day, but airlines and best practice strongly recommend six months), proof of onward or return travel, and evidence of sufficient funds (roughly USD 100 per day is commonly cited). Costa Rica also levies an airport departure tax of about USD 29, which is now usually bundled into the airline ticket price. Working is not permitted on a tourist entry, and the visa-free period is generally non-renewable beyond the granted stay.
