German passport holders need an e-visa for Bhutan, plus the mandatory Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US$100 per person per night. Apply online before travel; there is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival option. Germany has no visa-waiver arrangement with Bhutan, so German ordinary passport holders must obtain a Bhutan e-visa before arrival. Applications are submitted through Bhutan's official immigration/tourism portal. The cost has two parts: a one-time, non-refundable US$40 visa application fee, and the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of US$100 per person per night, which every adult visitor (except those from India) must pay for the full duration of the stay. The SDF rate of US$100/night is fixed from 1 September 2023 through 31 August 2027 (scheduled to rise to US$200/night thereafter). Children aged 6-12 get a 50% SDF discount and those 5 and under are exempt. Applications are reviewed within about five working days; the passport must be valid for at least six months beyond arrival. The e-visa is typically issued for the requested travel dates within an overall validity window and supports stays up to 90 days. Bhutan is not in the Schengen area, so Schengen 90/180 and ETIAS rules do not apply.
