Do Germany passport holders need a visa to visit BF?
German passport holders need a visa for Burkina Faso. Since 2023 the only route is the online eVisa via the official portal visaburkina.bf, applied for before travel. Embassy/consulate applications are no longer accepted, and visa-on-arrival is now only granted in exceptional cases. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry. A Germany ordinary passport holder is NOT visa-exempt for Burkina Faso and must obtain a tourist visa before travel. Burkina Faso launched its electronic visa system in 2023, and since then the eVisa applied for online at the official government portal (visaburkina.bf) is the standard and recommended channel. The German Federal Foreign Office confirms that applications at the Burkina Faso embassy are no longer possible and that all applications must be submitted online. While EU citizens were historically eligible for visa-on-arrival, the immigration authority now issues arrival visas only in exceptional circumstances, so travelers should not rely on it. The short-term tourist eVisa allows a stay of up to 90 days. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is compulsory for all travelers from 9 months of age, and an online entry form (QR code) must be completed within 72 hours before departure. Burkina Faso is not part of the Schengen area, so ETIAS and the 90/180 Schengen rule do not apply. Note: Burkina Faso has significant security risks and the German Foreign Office advises against travel; this guide covers visa procedure only.
