Afghanistan launched an electronic tourist visa (e-Visa) in March 2026 via the official E-Afghans portal (eafghans.com), which is the most practical channel for German travelers. The e-Visa is single entry, permits a stay of up to 30 days, and remains valid for 90 days from issue. Critically, the e-Visa may currently be used only for arrivals through Kabul International Airport (HKIA); travelers entering by land or at other airports must obtain a paper visa from an Afghan embassy or consulate (e.g., Berlin, or commonly Dubai/Islamabad). German nationals are eligible for the e-Visa; the excluded and conditional nationality lists (e.g., Israel, several neighboring states) do not include Germany. Reported costs are roughly US$8 application fee plus about US$120 visa fee, totaling around US$128, with processing typically 1-3 weeks. A passport valid at least six months and proof of onward travel are required. Separately, the German Federal Foreign Office issues a standing travel warning (Reisewarnung) against all travel to Afghanistan, and the German Embassy in Kabul is closed, meaning consular assistance on the ground is extremely limited.
