Chinese ordinary passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before traveling to Sri Lanka, but the tourist ETA is free of charge. It allows a 30-day stay with double entry. As of 2026, Chinese (PRC) ordinary passport holders cannot enter Sri Lanka without prior authorization, but they qualify for a FREE tourist ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization). China is one of roughly 40 countries on Sri Lanka's free tourist-ETA list, an arrangement that began on 2 September 2024 and was reconfirmed/extended in 2026. The ETA must be obtained online before departure (it became mandatory pre-departure as of 15 October 2025), takes only a day or two to process, and grants a 30-day stay with double entry. The application is submitted through the official portal at eta.gov.lk; the tourist category carries no government fee for eligible nationals (business and other categories still pay a levy). Travelers should apply only via the official site to avoid third-party surcharges, and their passport must be valid at least six months beyond the date of arrival. Because pre-travel authorization is required (even though it is free), the best single classification is "eta" rather than fully visa-free.
