Chinese ordinary passport holders need a visa to enter Ecuador for tourism. Ecuador suspended its visa-waiver agreement with China on 1 July 2024, so the previous 90-day visa-free entry no longer applies. You must obtain a Tourism / Temporary Visitor Visa (category VR/tourism) before travel. Until mid-2024, Chinese citizens enjoyed visa-free entry to Ecuador for up to 90 days under a mutual visa-exemption agreement that took effect in 2016. Citing irregular migration (roughly half of arriving Chinese nationals not departing through regular routes within the permitted period), Ecuador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility suspended the exemption effective 1 July 2024. As of 31 May 2026 the suspension remains in force and has not been reinstated, so Chinese ordinary passport holders are visa-required. Applicants must obtain a Tourism / Temporary Visitor Visa, generally applied for through Ecuador's online consular portal or at an Ecuadorian consulate. The visa permits an initial stay of up to 90 days, extendable for a further 90 days at the discretion of immigration authorities. Government-mandated processing can take up to 60 business days, though many applications complete in three to four weeks. Tourists are typically expected to show a confirmed itinerary (often with an accredited Ecuadorian travel agency), proof of financial means, a round-trip ticket, and a passport valid at least six months. Treat the suspension as conservatively visa-required; confirm exact fees and documents with the nearest Ecuadorian consulate before booking.
