Canadian passport holders need a visa to enter Sudan. There is no visa-free, visa-on-arrival, or reliable e-visa channel for Canadians; you must apply in advance at the Embassy of Sudan in Ottawa. Note: the Government of Canada advises AVOID ALL TRAVEL to Sudan due to ongoing armed conflict. A Canadian (ordinary passport) traveler to Sudan requires a visa obtained before departure. Sudan is not in the Schengen area. Canada is not among the roughly 35 nationalities eligible for Sudanese visa-on-arrival, so the standard route is a paper Entry Visa application through the Embassy of Sudan in Ottawa (Consular Section, 354 Stewart Street). Required items include a passport valid at least 6 months beyond intended departure, a completed application form, two passport photos, travel itinerary, and proof of yellow fever/cholera vaccination (recommended). The embassy quotes a standard Entry Visa fee around CAD 235, with processing of at least three weeks; the Government of Canada recommends allowing at least two months. While Sudan technically operates an e-visa portal (60-day validity, 30-day single-entry stay), its availability is unreliable during the conflict and is not the official Canadian-facing channel, so a consular visa is the conservative recommendation. CRITICAL CONTEXT: Since April 2023 Sudan has been engulfed in armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. Canada's advisory is the highest level - AVOID ALL TRAVEL. Khartoum airport is closed, Port Sudan operates sporadically and has faced drone strikes, and the Canadian Embassy in Khartoum has suspended operations (limited support via Addis Ababa, Ethiopia). On arrival, foreigners must register with the Aliens' Registration Office within 3 days and obtain a permit before traveling outside Khartoum.
