Do Canada passport holders need a visa to visit NI?

Canadian passport holders do NOT need a visa for tourism in Nicaragua. You can enter visa-free for up to 90 days. On arrival you simply buy a Tourist Card for about US$10 (cash) at the airport or land border. Canada is on Nicaragua's visa-exemption list, so ordinary Canadian passport holders may travel for tourism without obtaining a visa in advance. The standard permitted stay is up to 90 days, granted at the immigration officer's discretion (they stamp your passport and write the number of days authorized). Like nearly all visa-exempt nationalities (the only exceptions are El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras), Canadians must purchase a Tourist Card on arrival for approximately US$10, payable in cash. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date and you should be able to show proof of sufficient funds and onward/return travel. Stays can typically be extended for an additional 30 days for a fee through Nicaragua's General Directorate of Migration (DGME), up to a maximum total of 180 days. Note: although Canadian tourists can move within the Central America-4 (CA-4) zone (Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala) on a single 90-day allowance, Canada itself is not a CA-4 member state. Nicaragua launched an electronic visa portal in March 2026, but it applies only to nationalities that are NOT visa-exempt, so it does not affect Canadian tourists. Always reconfirm with the Government of Canada advisory shortly before travel, as Nicaragua has periodically revised entry rules.
