Do Canada passport holders need a visa to visit MW?
Yes, Canadian ordinary passport holders need a visa for Malawi as of 2026. Malawi reinstated visa requirements for Canada (and the US, UK, EU and others) effective 3 January 2026, ending the visa-free access granted in 2024. The easiest route is the official Malawi eVisa, applied for online before travel; a visa on arrival is also available at main ports of entry. Canada is no longer visa-exempt for Malawi. In February 2024 Malawi waived visas for 48 countries including Canada, but that exemption was revoked under a new reciprocity-based policy effective 3 January 2026. Canadian tourists must now hold a visa, obtained either online through the official Malawi eVisa portal (evisa.gov.mw) before departure or as a visa on arrival at main ports of entry. The recommended option is the eVisa, processed in about 3 working days, which avoids queues and confirms entry approval before flying. The standard tourist single-entry visa is valid for use within 90 days of issue and allows a stay of up to 90 days; a multiple-entry option is also available. Passports must be valid at least six months beyond the planned departure date and contain at least two blank pages. Travelers should apply only through the official .gov.mw portal to avoid third-party markups, and apply 2-3 weeks before travel.
