Do Canada passport holders need a visa to visit LK?
Canadian passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit Sri Lanka for tourism. As of 25 May 2026 the tourist ETA fee is waived for Canada (one of 40 eligible nationalities), but the ETA itself is still mandatory and must be approved before you travel. It allows a stay of up to 30 days. A Canadian ordinary-passport holder cannot enter Sri Lanka without prior authorization. Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for tourism and business, applied for online before departure. Under a policy effective 25 May 2026, Sri Lanka waived the ETA fee for nationals of 40 countries, including Canada, making the tourist ETA free of charge. The ETA application itself remains mandatory: travelers must still complete the online form and receive approval before boarding. The standard tourist ETA grants a stay of up to 30 days with double entry. Travelers should apply only through the official portal (eta.gov.lk) to avoid third-party surcharges, and must also complete a separate online arrival card up to 3 days before arrival. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date. Sri Lanka is in South Asia and is not part of the Schengen area, so no Schengen 90/180 rule or ETIAS applies. Because the fee waiver is recent and an official implementation could change, travelers should confirm fee status on the official portal at time of application; even if the fee returns, the ETA remains required, so the verdict is ETA-required.
